John Mackey to Share Life-Saving Dietary Approach at October 2017 American College of Lifestyle Medicine Conference in Tucson

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine(ACLM) will host Lifestyle Medicine 2017, October 22-25 at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson, Arizona. This year's conference, ?Transforming Health, Redefining Healthcare," will feature a keynote presentation by Whole Foods Market co-founder and CEO, John Mackey, co-author of The Whole Foods Diet: The Lifesaving Plan for Health and Longevity (Grand Central Publishing, April 11, 2017).

Offering both a persuasive science-based analysis of the benefits of a primarily plant-based diet rich in unprocessed foods along with practical tools for navigating food choices and making dietary and lifestyle changes, the book dispels nutritional myths and simplifies a huge body of medical science, health research, and nutritional advice to help readers make more informed food choices and discover how The Whole Foods Diet can help promote health and longevity.

Mackey will discuss how Americans' diets have changed in the past 100 years and how their health outcomes have changed as a result, including pros and cons of popular diets today such as Low Carb and Paleo.

Whole Foods Market has created a variety of strategies to help support the health of its team members, including free primary health care clinics, healthy eating discount card incentives and total health immersion programs where Whole Foods Market covers costs for attendees.

?I'm deeply passionate about healthy eating and empowering people to make more informed decisions about food," said Mackey. ?There's a proven correlation between diet and health, but popular diets and mixed messages around food and health can be confusing. The principles of the ?Whole Foods Diet" make healthy eating both accessible and achievable and promotes the commonalities that exist across many diets as the foundation for a healthier lifestyle. The diet recommends avoiding highly processed food and eating plant-based whole foods at least 90 percent of the time for optimal for health and longevity."

Mackey co-authored his new book with Drs. Matt Lederman and Alona Pulde. The predominantly whole food, plant-based dietary lifestyle the book advocates is consistent with ACLM's Standards, supported by evidence-based science wherein dietary lifestyle is used as a therapeutic intervention for disease prevention, treatment and, at times, even reversal.

"Fifty years ago, 2 million people in the US had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes," said ACLM President George Guthrie, MD, MPH, FACLM. ?Today, there are more than 160 million Americans who are pre-diabetic or have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes; yet, it's an illness that, for most people, need never exist. Type 2 diabetes is primarily a disease caused by unhealthy lifestyle choices. It's inspiring to see corporate leaders like John Mackey who are helping to amplify the urgent need for a paradigm-shift in this country, addressing the underlying lifestyle causes of much of our chronic disease burden."

Mackey opened his first ?SaferWay" alternative to the typical grocery store in 1978 and continues to lead Whole Foods Market as its CEO. Mackey has led the natural and organic grocer to become a $16 billion Fortune 500 company with more than 470 stores and 87,000 team members in three countries. Under Mackey's leadership, the company made Fortune magazine's annual ?100 Best Companies to Work For" list for 20 consecutive years, one of just 12 companies to make the list every year since its inception in 1998, and ranked first in the food and drug store industry as part of the magazine's ?Most Admired Companies" list in 2016.
While devoting his career to providing customers quality natural and organic foods, Mackey has also focused on building a more conscious way of doing business.

He was the visionary for many successful programs, including Whole Planet Foundation to help end poverty in developing nations, the Local Producer Loan Program to help local food producers expand their businesses, the Global Animal Partnership's rating scale for humane farm animal treatment, and the Health Starts Here initiative to promote health and wellness.

Mackey has been recognized as one of Fortune's ?World's 50 Greatest Leaders," Ernst & Young's ?Entrepreneur of the Year Overall Winner for the United States," Institutional Investor's ?Best CEO in America," Barron's ?World's Best CEO," MarketWatch's ?CEO of the Year," Fortune's ?Businessperson of the Year," and Esquire's ?Most Inspiring CEO."

The ACLM annual conference is the nation's premier medical education event exclusively focused on lifestyle medicine as the foundation of a transformed healthcare system. The CME-accredited conference will deliver impressive keynotes, evidence-based educational sessions, research posters and ample networking activities. In addition, the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine will administer the first-ever board certification exam in Lifestyle Medicine to some 300 physicians and other health professionals from around the world.
